twin OM617's - oel_brenner - 10-08-2008 this is on a few other forums.. and I know its a bit off-topic here but as there are a few 617 fans on this forum I thought I would share it here as well the project before my SL300D was this: http://www.coastalboatsales.com/jfraley ... boo?page=1 2x OM617's into a 28 foot sportfisherman nothing superturbo yet.. but I have plans.. video of engines running on page 26 http://www.coastalboatsales.com/jfraley ... oo?page=26 Re: twin OM617's - ForcedInduction - 10-11-2008 That is a very cool project! I'd love to make an H-10 or I-10 setup in a pickup or something. Re: twin OM617's - oel_brenner - 10-12-2008 yeah.. just do it like they do in tractor pulling, tie two engines together with a big chain Re: twin OM617's - Telecommbrkr - 10-12-2008 oel_brenner You have done what I have been dreaming of for a couple of years now. Awsome job!!! Do you have a journal explaining the build pictures? I noticed that you had to replace an engine part way through. With your planeing issue, these props were the ones used with the 454's? Is it a lack of RPM or HP/Tourque? Re: twin OM617's - oel_brenner - 10-12-2008 Thanks.. I dont really have a journal, just the captions along with the photos. I did have to replace one engine, broke a timing chain they are not the original props, I am running much larger/flatter wheels then the 454's used because of reduced engine RPM and I am running a reduction gear look around online for a prop calculator that will get you close, then trial and error these guys have a good prop calc: http://boatdiesel.com/ and if you want to do more math and less trial and error get Dave Gerr's book: http://www.amazon.com/Propeller-Handboo ... 61&sr=8-14 it is the absolute reference to the science behind marine props There is a guy in out in New Orleans who built a downeaster from scratch and powered it with a single OM617 and has had pretty good success RE: twin OM617's - oel_brenner - 08-07-2010 some videos of my boat running for all you OM617 heads out there.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4XzRJ0hTGs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqbRMGi72CM RE: twin OM617's - willbhere4u - 08-08-2010 sweet that looks like fun! RE: twin OM617's - yankneck696 - 08-08-2010 Ole Brenner, I contacted you a while back about your adapter plate on another forum. I now have a 1975 23' Penn Yan Tunnel drive with reverse rotation. (Right hand). Did you get a reversing trans for one of your engines & what ratio & make? As I can only fit a 12-13" prop in the tunnel, the prop will have to be super custom if I go for a 1:5 ratio. All of the PY's have the 1:1 VD trans. Any details will be greatly appreciated, as I am going back to work at the boat yard (Melbourne, FL) & will have access to the Lathe, overhead, plasma, TIG & MIG. Were you ever able to find the measurements on the plate? Also, are you just running both LH rotation? Glad to see you on this board, as it's somewhat kinder than the others. Ed I am running a ZF 1.25 ratio marine gear, and I run counter rotating props Both engines rotate the same direction, but the ZF gear flips rotation on the STBD side I am running 16" props, thru reduction gear, so if you can only fit 13" prop on your boat, you are probably going to have to stay with a 1:1 ratio, and may have to go to four blades to keep RPM under control. RE: twin OM617's - yankneck696 - 08-08-2010 Yeah, that ZF gear is a bit pricey, but with going back to work at the boatyard, I may stumble across something. I thought about just running in reverse with the VD, but there's a reliability issue there. Thalks, Ole... |
