Direct Air Intake Snorkel - mushkindiesel - 04-05-2015

Hi everyone, I have seen very mixed thoughts on replacing the factory air intake with a direct air intake mostly due to the fact that people say it will pull in the hot air from the engine block unlike the stock which pulls in cold ait from next to the grille. What if I were to either place the intake cone under the vents by the wipers and windshield or just route it out of a hole in the hood/side of the engine bay and pipe it up the A-pillar like on a jeep or other off-road vehicle? Kepp in mind I'm doing this to hear the turbo more, maybe gain a tiny bit of performance, and too make the thing look a little more invincible Smile.
I have a 300TD TURBODIESEL from 1985 currently all stock.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Your really Not going to "Hear" the turbo that much more, How about a few air box mods and a good filter element?

I personally think it looks gash to see intake pipes outside of the engine bay, 99% of the time they are the last thing that needed doing....

The late cali(?) intake takes air from under the arch liner...

Hmm in mine the filter is just a little to the left of the engine block and it has a U-tube to the turbo and intakes air from just to the left of the grille right about above the right headlight. It is a Euro model but I wouldn't think that would change the intake setup... Similar to the one in the picture I attached.

It does Smile Euro cars never got the other intake style (hence it's known as "cali setup" IIRC only late california cars got it). We also never got the trap oxidizer, Mercedes over here doesn't even know aboiut them... Big Grin

In fact - Turbodiesels are a rare occurance in the home market... The n/a models are MUCH more common.

Oh Smile thank you for the info, if I were to modify the intake in some way what would you guys think would be the best way to get more sound and maybe a little better performance?

Unfortunately modding the air filter won't increase performance. The stock setup is designed to flow a lot of air.

I can recommend straight piping your exhaust if you want to hear the turbo more... Tongue

I installed a straight 3" exhaust with resonator at the end and the turbo is very noticible. Didn't change anything on the intake side. It does get a bit loud at times, but feels alot peppier.

You people are high as a kite if you think ditching the stock air filter setup wont make the turbo more noticeable! The intake noise of my turbo is louder than the exhaust! I may not be getting "cool" air, but that stock setup is clunky so I threw it away.

Im not saying your wrong or anything, how on earth can you hear the induction noise over the exhaust where it is?

60 Trim Garrett going supersonic at 16psi? Idk haha. But on the frwy the intake is louder then the exhaust, or anytime she's spooled and the air filter is clean haha. There is a big difference in intake noise from clean filter to dirty

I can't hear my Holset H1C at 15psi over my exhaust ?? Fair shout if you can yours....Not an argument.... Mine doesn't even have a filter on....

Oddly enough, if you want intake noise from your turbo, a loose exhaust is how you get it.

Getting back to this again; all it takes to get facts about this is two cheap thermometers for a couple of pennys Wink And then takeing the car for a drive through various situations...

However I can save you the trouble of duct taping LCDs to your bonnet... http://retrorides.proboards.com/post/1759457 (note this ia M103 gasser with intake on the other side, far, far away from the exhaust!!!)

It's only realy relevant in slow traffic or at halt. Though these are the situations where the engine needs the best cooling. Not for making much power, but for surviving Big Grin Any ° less in intake temperature reduces exhaust temperature by a couple of °! The stock intake is a purposefull construction for getting cold air when it's needed. 

On a race car that's constantly moving fast and huge amounts of air purging the engine bay it might be less important... It's a matter of what the car is used for. 

So - take some temperature probes, take measurements and draw your own conclusions Wink

I fitted a K&N filter inside my stock airbox on my E300 W210 and it made the factory turbo a lot more vocal, then I removed the centre silencer and catalytic converter and its even more whistly now..

Cool I'll try that and also... has anyone removed the weird "U-Tube" going from intake to turbo? People said to get rid of it but what would you replace it with? Just bigger piping or...?
