Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 04-06-2015 Hello fellow members , After a few years of owning my 79 300d I have decided to turbo it ........We named the old girl the "Coal grenade" as to how long it will survive who know's I began fabricating my own manifold which proved to be tricky due to clearance problems with the automatic gearbox rods ,brackets and the N/a manifold. In Australia we don't have factory turbo om617 and all the crap cluttering the righthand side of the car caused a great headache, I moved the turbo further forward than a factory manifold would have the turbo to allow more room for the new exhaust. A blown head gasket set the mood for this project, So I In the last 3 weeks I have ported the head where needed , changed springs and cam to a later model which had 80 thou more lift and some other little modification here and there and replaced the headgasket. The engine has the stock "mw" pump fitted but later models have "m" pumps which I have as a spare if needed please feel free to chime in on any advice as I play around with this project and I know this style of project probably has been posted to death but not by me Cheers Anthony RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - Petar - 04-06-2015 Check your valve clearence when you bolt it up When the cam was uprated the valve cutouts in the piston were increased in size. Unless you wan't the valves to kiss the pistons.... RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 04-06-2015 Hi there, it's a later block with early head , I have set the clearances with no issues so far Cheers anthony RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - NZScott - 04-07-2015 Nice work, wish I could do that sorta thing myself... Is that a purple HZ I see? My grandad had an HQ wagon the same colour RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 04-07-2015 G'day all, Installed the gauges there now patiently waiting for the rest of the project It's a Hj Monaro that my wife bought 13 odd years ago one day it will get some loving, she has her HG premier to worry about so it's on the bottom of priorities I ordered the exhaust today and mandrel bends should get it tmrw or the next day . Cheers Anthony RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - Captain America - 04-07-2015 Right on man! Good work! RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 04-08-2015 Cheers Cody.......Picked up the 3" bends for the exhaust today so I'm slowly getting my SH*t together ! Cheers Anthony RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - TIMTAMS - 05-05-2015 Hey Anth, Anymore updates? Im in sydney about to do the same to my Merc and would love to hear more Cheers Graeme RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 05-31-2015 G'day all, finally I have been able to put some time in on the grenade, instead of working on other peoples cars ! RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - OM616 - 05-31-2015 When you are ready for more fuel the MW has lots of adjustability available. No need for the M unless you want bigger elements. Several of us have learned how to make the MW pump preform so do not hesitate to ask for help. There will of course be those who will say that only the M pump will do, so don't be surprised by that. Knowledge is power!! RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 06-01-2015 finished the exhaust today so tomorrow I will be able to take the car for it's first test drive ! YAY RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 06-02-2015 Went for my first drive today ,what a improvement, doesn't struggle up hills and is happy cruising around, temp stayed on 80degc ,with the stock pump setting and manual shifting it made 16psi of boost with a slow climb of egt @480 deg C in 2nd gear, it will be interesting to see what it does when I'm able to turn the fuel up Cheers anthony RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - TKMad - 06-02-2015 Congratulations! Looks like a fine job! How does it sound without a muffler? RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - MFSuper90 - 06-02-2015 You can it will be so much more fun to drive when you turn the pump up, trust me! RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - NZScott - 06-03-2015 Sweet progress. That EGT is lower than I thought...stock fuel though still I guess When I get around it I'll be doing something very similar. RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 06-09-2015 I have had a issue from day one low oil pressure and the engine is running a lot hotter on the highway which cause's lower oil pressure so something isn't right ! RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 06-12-2015 The pump timing was way off, im guessing it was around mid 35+ deg Btdc , I have now set it around 26-27 btdc and seem's to be running better, and starting easier. Still smokey on idle im guessing injectors next and im yet to touch the pump ! Cheers Anthony RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 09-23-2015 Just a quick up date I have Up graded the cooling system with a custom 3 core radiator , Im also running a new transmission cooler too. Temps seem a little more controlled now Cheers Anth RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - NZScott - 09-26-2015 Really neat. Turned the juice up yet? And how are your EGTs? My car will be out for similar surgery as soon as I get another DD. RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 12-09-2015 G'day Guys, EGT are great sit's around 380 deg C before the turbo running 18psi with water methanol injection which kick's in around 8psi RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - NZScott - 12-10-2015 Nice to hear. What WM injection pump do you have? Would be nice to do a dyno run RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 12-11-2015 (12-10-2015, 01:29 AM)NZScott Nice to hear. What WM injection pump do you have? Running a cool mist pump , Chasing a larger pump to get the car on the 1/4 next year, that's a real life dyno RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - Tito - 12-14-2015 Do you use an engine oil cooler? I turbo'd a 603 once and the oil pressure just dropped to 0 after 10km of highway driving. The oil is passing the hot turbo and you'll need some kind of cooling. RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - NZScott - 12-19-2015 Been looking at plenty of W/M pumps but none of the "cheaper" ones look ideal to me. Wish I had a track around here to even do a proper 1/4 mile.. Tito, looks like a stock oil cooler in beside the radiator RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 12-19-2015 The original oil cooler is beside the 3 core radiator I have no cooling issues so far engine temp sits around 83deg C which is normal. RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - NZScott - 12-03-2019 Never thought I'd see it on MCM...knew what it was as soon as I saw the thumbnail https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHiinaAodlA RE: Anth's 79 300d N/a Coal grenade - anths - 12-04-2019 I knew about it , what I didn't know was how rough the car looks almost makes me want it back again , good to see My Old grenade is getting around..... |
