Lets face it, the stock engine mounts suck donkey dingleberries. I've installed 3 sets in 4 years, the drivers side always collapses first and if you even think of diesel fuel in their presence they turn soggy. The heat shields do squat, all they do is make inspection of the mounts more difficult.

Is there any known alternative to the OEM rubber?

I've contemplated of modifying 1963-1982 GM V8 style sandwiched solid rubber mount. It uses a base plate that can be modified to mount on the Mercedes frame and you would have to make an adapter for mounting on the engine arms. May not dampen the vibrations very well since it is solid.

what about a G-wagen mount?
I've seen diesel ones get soggy but that's after many years of diesel soak.

I think that for a diesel, you'll want a bit of movement (much more than what the GM mount appears to offer)

hey, how did that cat get in the picture?!

At the local auto parts store there are cylindrical mounts that are fluid damped internally and super strong--the only way I found them was to browse the back rack and look in all the LARGE boxes until I found what looked like it would work. They quiet some of the engine noise to the frame, as well as being super strong, shed oil, and have a simple single stud top and bottom(may require mods to install though).

If this mount is not too tall and with some fabrication, you can use a w124 OM603 engine mount that is fluid filled.

Or perhaps a w210 OM606 or w211 OM648 fluid filled engine mount.

I just got religious about hosing off the mounts after doing work. I think the heat shields are bad, as they prevent cleaning. The 124/201 mounts are WAY better ( and pricey)
