Blowby
Blowby
Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the forum and wanted to get some opinions. I'm looking to buy an '87 300SDL that has a greasecar kit in it. I've looked the car over pretty well and it seems that there are little mechanical concerns. I am concerned with one aspect though, and that is blowby. After driving for about 40 mins (mostly testing the turbo, the guy claimed it had just been rebuilt) I pulled over to check things out. Opened up the crankcase and noticed oil was sputtering and a little smoky. Didn't get too good of a look because I didn't want oil sputtering all over the block. With the cap just resting on the opening, it sat pretty nicely without bouncing around. The car has about 220k on it, but I was wondering if that seemed like a concern to some of you older and wiser guys? I know blowby is in all engines, but do those symptoms seem reasonable for 40 mins of hard driving and the mileage? Do you think I should be concerned?

The tea kettle test will only tell you if your engine is about dead, its useful for noobs who dont know what a diesel is supposed to run like. The only real test is a proper compression test. Chances are its ok. Whats the head stamping?

Reason enough to skip it.

Sputtering? How bad?
You might have some ring gumming Veg does that sometimes.
Water injection seems to cure it.
THere was a guy in another forum with a E300TD who had exessive blowby, oil stick poping out, rough engine and all, he misted some water in the manifold while driving and it cured it.
Grenwrench here has a water injection in his car and he's happy with.
