OM606 bellhousing - is it the same as an OM617?
The Subject line says it all. I'm trying to determine if a transmission, or say a custom transmission adapter kit, designed for an OM617 will work with an OM606.
The other question I have is whether the crankshaft bolt pattern for bolting up the flywheel or flexplate is the same.

Dang it.
I'd like to buy and build an automatic prior to the swap to reduce downtime. The bummer is that 722.608 cores are rare and spendy - so I was hoping to run a GM transmission to solve that problem AND allow me to turn the wick up on the engine later down the road. Not to mention once I ditch the car due to rust/rot, I could put the engine and GM transmission in just about anything.

Happen to have the intermediate plate from between the block and the trans? It should be as simple as creating a hybrid intermediate that has the 60X block pattern on one side, and the 61X trans pattern on the other.

This bolts right to the engine with no intermediate plate...so if the OM617 and OM606 are the same pattern on the block...I will be golden.

Give me a few to check that pic, I've been up to my ears in 617 intermediate plates this month...
EDIT:
Looks to be the same, but doesn't seem to use the top 2 mounting bolt locations. from what I can see.
From a cursory glance the 12mm dowel holes are in the same place as well, as are the mounting locations to the cast bottom pan.
I'd say you're golden!
Whoops, I thought that kit was for a 606...
I guess all I did was confirm it was for the intended 617.. :/

In the meantime, I've been emailing a few folks selling bad OM606 engines on craigslist. I'm hoping to find one for a few hundred bucks so I can have the folks in MN make a CAD/CAM file of the OM606 bellhousing and crankshaft pattern...then making an adapter plate will be a walk in the park.

OK - I managed to find an OM606 out of a '96 E300 with a bad block. I'm waiting on pics in the meantime.
Is it a fairly safe assumption that this NA OM606 and my turbocharged OM606.962 will be identical as far as the engine block's bolt pattern at the bellhousing and the crankshaft flange where it bolts to the flexplate/flywheel...?
Your input on this would be most appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the OM602,603,606 blocks are all the same from the middle, back.
Attached is a picture taken by the seller of the junk NA OM606 engine I'm probably going to buy. The OM606 has the bellhousing cast right into the block...it also has an interesting flywheel/flexplate combo.

If you can get me the front part of a bellhousing, I can probe it out and get a good housing pattern.
Would be up to you to get the exact crank position though.

I currently have access to a CMM, just need something that's clean and easily fixtured.
A DRO and an edge finder would work as well, would just need to do the math to get a center point for each hole. Autocad can import points from a spreadsheet in that case, and you can best-fit most of the holes. The critical ones are the dowels, so those should be pinned for diameter/measured with micrometers as well. You can do a good estimate of the crank using only the housing pattern, it's just a bit difficult to explain.
I'd do the probe for nothing since I'm interested in adapting a 60x to my Mitsubishi trans at some point, you'd need to pick up the tab on shipping though.
It all boils down to what is easiest for you.
