OM606 with OM603 IP trouble
OM606 with OM603 IP trouble
First off, Hi guys. I am new to the forum, I've read a lot but this is my first post. I am hoping that someone here can help me out.
I've got a 98 OM606, I put a Om603 IP on it. I can't get this thing to start reliably and idle. I crank it over it cranks fast, then it will begin to crank very slowly right before it will fire. I can't help but think that this sounds like a timing issue. What do you guys think. If it is timing does anyone have any suggestions on getting the timing right?
Right now I don't have a throttle linkage hooked up, so I may have to adjust the idle screw to get this thing to idle without a throttle linkage.
I would adjust the fuel-pump as the original electronic pump was intended to be.
Then start the engine, and adjust the pump to 500rpm idle w/O ELR connected, then conected the ELR.
The trottle linkage is not supposed to control the idle.
Have you done this first?
I did adjust the pump as the original pump intended to be. With the injection pump locked in place the engine is at 14.5 degrees ATDC.
The engine is not in car, it is on a test stand. I am building it for a swap. I don't have the 603 electronics, I don't know the correct volt to be applied to the ELR. I know it is something less than 12v.
Hey guys,
I just figured it out. It turns out I was off on the timing by a few degrees, 180 to be exact. Opps. At least it is running now. I cant get started on my swap soon.
I'm excited!

Is that Boston I here in the back ground Sweet!
What are you putting it in!
I need to fine me one of these motors for my 300sdl tank!
Yeah, I was on the radio, awesome song though.
I was trying to avoid saying what I was putting it in because I didnt' know how it would go over on this forum. I am putting it in a 1990 jeep Comanche.
I got lucky I picked a wrecked 1998 e300 for $1100. I've made $600 back selling parts on eBay.
I am in the market for a water pump pulley for this engine if anyone has one they are willing to part with.
Now that's a cool swap! post some pics as you progress it's all cool if its got a Benz diesel in it!
Hey, I'm looking for a spare electronic pump if you want to sell yours...
I bought it off of some lady who wrecked her car and she had no idea what she had. It had 150K on it. She goes "I know it has a lot of mile but a Mercedes should be good to at least 200K." That is how you get a 98 606 for $1100. Craigslist is your friend.

I sold the pump on e-bay a few months ago, sorry man.
I do have some more parts laying around if anyone needs something. I'll let you know if I have it.
Do you still have the transmission? I'm looking for a 722.6 to play with.
I do still have the transmission. Right now I am leaning towards using the trans with a stand alone trans controller. Powertrain Control Systems makes one that will work for this application, which I assume is what you want to do.
I also have a 722.3 trans. If I decide to go that route rather than the 722.6 I will PM you.

"Tried to fit in your ZJ"... What happened why couldn't you make it work?
I am going to run 722.6 trans behind my 606, with that stand alone controller. I think the only problem I am going to have to over come is the that stupid front sump oil pan. I don't know if I am going to more the sump & pick up tube to the rear or just hack up the oil pan where needed to avoid may steering linkage and axle. Lucky this is like the one 2wd jeep, so i don't have to worry about the front diff hitting.
I don't know if relocating the sump/pickup to the rear is feasible.

That is not to reassuring to hear, as I am concerned about the height of the 606. My truck is a uni-body as well with a straight axle. The 606 is 27" tall, I think the 4bt is close to 36" tall. I am willing to go as high as 4" on a lift, and 4" on a cowl hood if need be. I prefer stock height, but I want a diesel in there more than I want it to remain stock height.
As far as I can tell there is no other MJ with an om606 or even a om603. I can't wait to own the first!
