I've been playing with a tape measure up front in the w201 and there isn't a whole lot of room for a big intercooler under the front...

So, got thinking about using the standard 3" chargecoolers that are floating about on ebay at the mo... I see a few people on here have used them, and a close friend has two of them on his boat and they seem to work well.

It would keep things a bit less cramped up front...

Any thoughts?

First thought is.. what do you mean by chargecooler vs intercooler, aren't they the very same thing? Perhaps you mean water-to-air vs air-to-air coolers?

I've seen decent intercoolers on W201s. As they are simple and cheap, I'd put one, too.

An air-water intercooler is the best option for packaging and cools every bit as well as an air-air intercooler. It can have a much smaller working surface thanks to water's higher density and greater heat capacity. Don't skimp on the radiator though, go as large as you can fit.

If you use a tube type it needs to be at least half the area of the A/C condenser (about 300sq. inches). If you use a radiator style something at least 50sq. inches (from a motorcycle for example) will work.
A transmission cooler will not be remotely big enough, it needs to reject enough heat to get the water as near to ambient as possible at full heat input.

Yes, thats exactly what I use. Even after a hard run the lower 1/3 of it has always been cool to the touch.

For a pump, the circulation pump used on every MB's heater system is just about the right flow. A fluid reservoir isn't needed but you do need an expansion (air) tank.

Check the W201 forums, there is a number of people who have AA ic however AWIC is still the best option.

That is one. Even benzworld would be a good one. PP and bw are good for different reasons, I like the segmentation by chassis in bw.
