Looking to put a 4 or 5 speed in my TD
Looking to put a 4 or 5 speed in my TD
Hi all, I'm new to the world of Benz power and loving it! I hate my auto it shifts at the wrong time, no power. I am driving by Atlanta where there is a good amount of Mercedes in junk yards. What to I need to pull out of the donor car for mine. Also how do I tell what would fit mine.
Thanks
someone may correct me or elaborate but, I recall everyone says the place to get a 4 speed is out of a 240.
Almost no such thing as a 5 speed and US 300d where all autos.
I put a post on here almost 6 months ago and this is what I was told not word for word so anyone correct me if i am wrong.
Foot pedal assembly out of a 240 manual
Fly wheel out of a 240 manual
I am not sure if it is linkage or a hydraluic clutch but you will need all of that out of a 240 I have been told everything is a bolt in swap. Search the tuning drivetrain section you will find lots of threads on this.
Hoping to do this conversion in the next few weeks.
I will post everything it took to accomplish this!
Thanks for the info. If I put a 4 speed in it can I use the same drive shaft?
In September, 1982, all models received a mild facelift. The rectangular headlights, previously fitted only to the 280/280E, were standardized across the board, as was power steering. Since February, 1982, an optional 5-speed manual transmission was available in all models (except 300 TD).
W123 production ended in January, 1986 with 63 T-models rolling out. Most popular single models were the 240D (455,000 built), the 230E (442,000 built) and the 200D (378,000 built).
W123 introduced innovations including ABS (optional from August, 1980), a retractable steering column and an airbag for the driver (optional from 1982).
Available options included MB-Tex (Mercedes-Benz Texturized Punctured Vinyl) upholstery or velour or leather upholstery, interior wood trim, passenger side exterior mirror (standard on T models), 5-speed manual transmission (European market only), 4-speed automatic .....

maybe you can get one from a w124 or w126

maybe see what all you can hunt first and then narrow down how to get it into your chassis
I am pretty sure mine is a euro model. My dad bought it new in Denmark then shipped it over in 84 when he moved. Where can I look to be sure?
All the plates and manuals are in German so I can't look in the book.
Thanks
there are some threads here that detail the various swaps-
This one gives info on the 4-speed swap-

When are you driving by? I am out of town this weekend but could easily run down next weekend to pullapart east and south and scout it out for you. Even the 4spds are pretty rare. The can be found on car-part.com easy and sometimes cheap enough. I think the whole set at pullapart is like $150, pedals and all. Pulling them from the 240d Is super easy. Nothing special needed other than standard tools, 1/2 socket set and allen socket set. Getting the starter off can get be a bear. You will need a 12 pointed socket for the flywheel bolts.
I have a full 4 speed manual in my garage from a 300D- the only thing missing is the flywheel. I just had an offer for the transmission itself for $250 and I passed. The whole unit from shifter/tranny/driveshaft/clutch etc is ready for the 5 cylinder diesel... and I'm willing to listen to offers.

(02-17-2011, 11:19 AM)winmutt I have a broken 4spd you can have if you want. I have the proper shifter linkage for $60 and I will throw in a variety of other parts for the conversion.
