currently working on oil-lines, and have started wondering if the stock oil-cooler is really necessary?

Other then reduced oil capacity...are there any other issues I may encounter in a non-autobahn continent?

thanks,
manny

With the turbo, I would keep it. Cheap insurance for a pricey project you have there.

Absolutely. Oil is the primary cooling medium of the engine's pistons and lower half.

I can attribute to that!

On that note... My 300 with the toasted head gasket (and hydro-locking #2 cylinder) One time after I cranked the water out of the glowplug hole and got her started, I went to get some lunch with a buddy. Pulled up to Jack in your ass and left the car running right in front of the door. CCV hose went straight to the ground and had a jet of steam (5/8" hose) coming out of it.... Some black lady said something like "Why is that car steaming so much?" My buddy replied with "Oh, that car is hydrogen powered..." She believed him!

Ahhh yes. With mine, I routed it to the drivers side between the lines right at the PS box and loosely secured it to the brake rod. It doesn't hang quite as low as yours

What are you guys running for a thermostat just trying to decide which one to get

I'm going to be running this one:

This Billet Style Cast Aluminum Fluid Control Thermostat with 1/2” NPT ports allows the oil to bypass the cooler until it reaches 180°F at which point the internal thermostatic valve closes allowing 95% of the oil through the cooler. This process allows the engine/transmission to achieve the ideal operating temperature quicker before passing the oil through the cooler. At temps below 180°F the valve is open, with 90% of the oil bypassing the cooler. The remaining 10% of the oil flows through the cooler, maintaining constant system pressure, preventing air pockets and eliminating cold oil shock.

The unit can be rotated 180° to change flow direction.
Perfrect for all-season climates
Flow: 20 gpm
Rated to 200 psi
