There's a lot of meat back there but she should be able to pull it off no problem.
I bought Rudolf's gauges off him, waiting for those to show up. Boost, EGT, EMP
Progress...

how long did it take to pull the engine / trans ? Looking at the Harbor Freight Lift and stand, 2,000 lbs rated. I need to replace head, and my guess every gasket since they all seem to leak. Would this be do-able in a weekend?
When I worked at the salvage yard, we'd have that combo out in 1 hour tops with 2 people. That would be no cutting, unbolting everything, unplugging everything, undoing all hoses & capturing as many fluids as we could. Also, that would be with air tools & a torch to "break anything loose".
Here's my hints: spray everything down with PB Blaster for a week prior & have a friend or friends to help. Air helps greatly, heat stubborn bolts with torch (minimum MAP gas) & then douse with PB to crack loose. If you're removing fastners that are getting tighter as you go, tighten them up & respray with PB & wirebrush them & then PB again.
As for a pull, regasket, then install in a weekend, unless you are adept at it, don't even bother trying. Make a plan as to what you want to get done on the engine & do it all as you have it out for a week. You WILL break, crossthread, strip, tear, rip or bend something if you set a weekend's time for it all. That way, you can cover all contingencies.
Get a hold of a good torque wrench & just take your time to do it right while you have it out.

agreed. i budgeted a month for my engine swap, so things could go at a relaxed pace. i could have had the old engine pulled and the new engine in in a weekend if i busted my ass and had a helper, but its so much nicer to be able to have time to twiddle with things, deal with unanticipated repairs, etc.
one thing i would suggest considering if you're going to regasket is new hardware. lowes has a good selection of metric grade 8 bolts and nuts, and most of the stuff on our cars can be found there. next time im doing major work on an OM i would definitely get new nuts / bolts / washers wherever possible. i think its a nice touch and one less thing to be a pain in the ass when you work on the car later.
So input needed.
The SD motor and trans has the electric speedo and oil pressure. Is it hard to adapt that stuff into the 300D?
Adapt? Too hard. But swapping is easier.
Best way is to take the oil filter housing from the 300D motor and swap it into the 300SD motor. You should replace the housing gasket anyways because they tend to leak with over 100,000 miles plus on them.
For the trans, the best way is to also take the tail from the 300SD trans and swap it out with the 300D trans so you can have the mechanical input.
.
Thanks buddy,
But crap! I was hoping I could have fancy electrical gauges! haha
Might be time to purchase that oil filter housing plate!
Started ripping apart the SD.
Freakin tube nuts stripped both fittings on the oil cooler.... Good thing I have 3 extras haha
I don't want to say "I told you so". About the extra oil coolers you have.
Its pretty bad ass that you have a mini personal pick-a-part going on.
It sure was reassuring to find only TWO bolts holding the drive shaft to the double rubber dumper attachment (harmonic damper / Flex joint)
Its pretty interesting to find all the things Mercedes did to make the ride more comfortable in the SD's versus the D's....
Eh, Just pics ...
60 Trim baby
Had to do this to get home, Then just kept on since it wasn't leaking. I give madd props to the hose for taking the abuse!
Fancy Housing wrench
mmmmm Pretty
Yuck! That's on the SD haha
Biggest Widow I've seen in a while
Got some goodies from Rudolf Yesterday...
Intake boost, Exhaust Manifold Pressure, Exhaust Temp
He is also welding up the outlet of my compressor housing to accept a silicone elbow to go into the Intercooled Manifold
nice! want
shame that paint didn't really hold up long term on it!
you should strip it off and shine it up nice nice, awesome score. Rudolf is a magician with finish quality, everything is really well done, show off the welds!

Surprised how clean everything was under the valve cover of the SD engine

Is there major differences between MW Pumps?

Are you saying that's an earlier chain? And your saying the later versions have the outer part crimped?

(06-09-2011, 07:23 AM)dropnosky Wow, there was metal under there! I knew the CA climate would be good for that part
Are you going to have it coated or paint it?
Ceramic coated by the company that does the headers at my work... something like $30-40
WTF Mercedes...
It's BS! Both of my 722's have that thing
Mine had that too. I made a socket an ended up not needing it for the spare trans.
I'll look to see if I still have it.
I made a sweet tool out of pipe. I knew the metal was too soft but what the hell...
Yeah, That didn't work lol. BioHazard offered to lend me his socket but I am getting impatient and refuse to spend the money so sorry Mercedes .....
EVERYTHING had silicone all over it No wonder it wouldn't come apart
Now that I pissed off all the purists out there, heres the problem:
The mechanical speedo gear has a oil squirter for the gear and the elec. one does not! What to do
I think converting the mechanical gauges over to electric is looking better and better
Wha chu think about that almighty DV?
