Clutch upgrade.
Clutch upgrade.
The Gwagen has a 23cm clutch. The W123 has a 21cm clutch. I am unsure if it requires a fly wheel as the ring gear for the starter would have to be the same size right? Anyone have a flywheel laying around they can measure the inner diameter and mounting bolt diameters? I think the gwagen has a tinner wall on the flywheel. I have seen one fly wheel that was unlike the other 617's. Seemed longer and more angled.
We have a winner!

Now to find me some fly wheels.
There was one floating on ebay not too long ago. Now what about a upgrade clutch that would work with the 240d flywheel and slave cylinder, sprinter maybe?

I should ask a buddy of mine who has a place to get custom disc's made. I think my race disc was like 140 bucks. Its a organic friction material with 6 super heavy springs and the Saab V4 spline. Maybe they can make something for our diesels. I'll ask next time I speak with him.
140 is a reasonable price as a new stock 240d is $120 from autohaus. I don't want to be changing mine every year.

At the race shop we use to machine the fly wheel height to get the stock pressure plate to clap harder more pressure on the disk so it would pass tech inspection with stock parts for spec miata
This is the mounting height? That is an interesting idea. Do you think any machine shop would do this while I am getting it resurfaced?
If you build it they will come.
I put the order in today with Classic Parts. Cost is somewhere around $900. Not for the light hearted. Of course I will probably have to get a flex disc upgrade.
They are supposed to deck both surfaces equally when they do the fly wheel! you can ask for a little more not sure how much you should do? you don't want to go past the cam in the pressure plate? I think it was only a couple of thousandths but made a difference in the spec miata's im in the same boat just got a fly wheel from a 1969 220d and it needs to be surfaced!
I just got my G clutch and flywheel in (from the ebay guy in Germany... offroad-world is his screen name) on friday... Gonna have it resurfaced and balanced and then swap it for my 240 setup when I get the time...

(05-18-2009, 10:11 PM)winmutt I decided to go the expensive route and get everything NIB OE. offroad-world wants $400 for a worn looking flywheel, I paid ~$500 for a brand new one. Someone should tell him the bottom just dropped out of his market.

Its a smoother ride and the gwagen clutch grabs with ease. Normally getting on to the ramps was a bit of a struggle, now I feel like I have a Gwagen! Downside, turbo lag from low rpm in 3rd is worse. 200D flywheel just revs faster. Well worth the effort, maybe not so much on the money.

huh.. he jacked the price up a bit.. either that or he gave me a non-fleabay special price...
yeah, got the G clutch kit and a used flywheel for ~750, but that included shipping for each... he had to ship 2 packages due to excessive weight tho...
That is about right, mine was all new in box from MBUSA for $200 more. They had to ship from Germany and were nice enough to waive the core charges (which I thought was pretty fantastic). I really love the guys (Thomas in particular) at Classic Parts.
Hi Winmutt
i know this was a long time ago but, can tell me what the difference was with g wagon flywheel? I too have been using a lighter flywheel actually an m110 flywheel so alot lighter, with the m110 flywheel it drives great almost no turbo lag even with a hx35, the problem is there is quite alot of driveline vibrations and loud gear chatter in neutral at idle, did you have the getrag rattle before after changing to the heavy flywheel? Any other observations would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
