I've got the engine out of my '82 300D, eventually it will be mated to my '89 Ranger's drivetrain.

Here are the plans:
Ditch the GT2056V
Long tube exhaust
Holset HE351V
W115 Intake
A/A Intercooler

Progress:
Vac pump half removed, rack limiter removed, engine on a stand in the garage...

Pics to come...

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

Where should I mount my turbo and what manifolds should I use?

I'm torn between piping the '78 N/A manifold with it's long runners to up near the alternator:

or...use the crappy stock exhaust manifold and get a W115 intake one day:

What do you guys think?

Also, I blocked off the heater return line to help with clearance issues :p

I decided to pull the whole head so I could check the bores/ pistons/ prechambers and port the head. The bores are within ~0.0015" and everything looks great. Lightly ported the head, it's in the parts washer right now.

I have a spare w123 and a spare '84 ranger in my backyard, now you have me considering a project like this! Im just not sure what the smog requirements/laws are in california about this sort of thing

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
-1974 240D, FRESH PAINT!!!!!!

When would one estimate to spool this he351ve on this 5 zylinder? maybe its a good idea to make a 'stopscrew' to the vnt lever, to prevent it from fully closing (=exh brake mode)

Once I have everything put together I will be posting prints for the adapter plate and bearing alignment plug. Just be sure to put a 1984 or 1985 om617a into the 84 ranger and you're fine.

We will see how the HE351V spools Big Grin I have heard of people using it on 2.3L gas motors, so I should be able to use it with the 3.0L. I will be monitoring exhaust pressure as well as temperature.

Does anyone know what exhaust pressure the valves start to float?

I picked up a HE351VE to put on my 617a some day. I have looked through some ricer forums and some have tried to use them, none were monitoring the EMP.

Looking at the turbine, I see how I would "recalibrate" the turbine housing so it spools quicker with less EMP. I like the larger turbine dia as it will produce more torque with less pressure, the trick is to make all the exhaust have to flow through the outer half to 1/3 of the turbine diameter. That is where the Pitched portion of the blades are which will generate the most torque, the center of the turbine basically just about free flows, so you have to depend on the "paddle wheel" effect from the VNT to get the turbine to spool, which results in High EMPs.

If it does not work as well as you would like, feel free to contact me. I spent some time at a turbine engine R&D company long ago now. I even thought of making a new turbine wheel just for the 617 application, but the cost would be too much.

Measure it all using straight edges. You need to figure the stickout of the input shaft & an adapter for the throwout bearing. Do yourself a favor & get a small machinist ruler at Ace hardware for more precise measurements.

(02-03-2012, 08:52 AM)Simpler=Better How thick of a plate and what material would y'all recommend I make my adapter from?

Measure it all using straight edges. You need to figure the stickout of the input shaft & an adapter for the throwout bearing. Do yourself a favor & get a small machinist ruler at Ace hardware for more precise measurements.

I am guessing you are planing on using the Ranger flywheel, I was doing the same swap but in 2wd using a 240 flywheel, but it is too large to fit in the bell. I'm not sure you will be able to use the ranger flywheel due to the small diameter because the starter has to fit close to the block and if memeroy serves me correct there is not enough room. So the other option is a trans from the F150 and 300 6cly flywheel or 240 flywheel.

I can't decide on what I want to do for my turbo. I have the 2056V setup and ready to go, but that would limit me to ~18psi (which I'm confident I can supplement with methanol).

The HE351V will give me 25psi no problem, but I doubt I can dump enough methanol to burn the extra 10psi of air.

Thoughts?

**EDIT**
I'm going to run the 2056V and stock manifold for a while. Once I figure out my fueling situation I'll worry about more air.

I decided to go back to the 2056V. I'm looking to push "14psi" of fuel with the stock pump and then add enough methanol to burn up an additional 4-5 psi of boost. If I get my hands on a super pump one day I'll upgrade to the Holset 351V. I'm hoping to finish porting the manifolds and rigging up the turbo lines by this weekend. The stock log exhaust manifold had some major imperfections-port #1 had a grape-sized obstruction.

The nozzles are rated at 1GPH @ 100psi (I got them from McMaster-Carr for ~$7 each). My pump supposedly runs at a "constant" 120psi, so I'm leaving it to fluid mechanics to properly regulate.

Hi
Nice project. Did the methanol/water injection work fine? did you feel any increase in power with it? Mow much water vs methanol?

Are there anyone that runs a 617 with a HE351V? According to Forcedinduction it will be way to big and end up on the wrong side of the surge line? The 617 isn't exactly what you would call a race engineDodgy The VE is probably in the seventies?

The HE351V has been run on Ford 2.3L motors (redline around 5,500) so I would assume that you could run it on a 617, you would just want to monitor your EMP and turbo RPM.

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

I would be willing to bet that with the proper fueling & setup, the HE351v would do just fine. FI was using a "FI tweaked" pump that may not have been optimal. With what we know now about pumps, I bet OM616 could make it work....

I'm sreiously considering putting this into a Wrangler instead, IF I can find a cheap Wrangler. There's a CJ5 up here for $1k, no top.
