California smog laws
California smog laws
Okay I have thought about this for a while and can't seem to find any answers so I thought I would ask all the knowledgable folks here. I have an '84 Ford Ranger sitting in my back yard, and I also have a spare '79 w123 240D with low miles (body beat to shit), and I was wondering what, if any legal issues there would be if I swapped the mercedes engine into the ford. I know diesels dont have to be smogged but are there laws that say you cant swap older diesel engines into newer vehicles? I think it would be pretty awesome to have a small diesel pickup
Thanks y'all!!
I believe that you must swap in a like or newer year engine, till it's 25 years old. Go to your DMV & get their rules.

I second what yankneck said
Didn't they make disel rangers back in the day?
Okay I know someone who works at DMV, unfortunately she is very reclusive so its hard getting ahold of her, but at least I know where she lives lol
84 you should be good as far as federal, plus like said above, rangers came with a mazda 4cyl diesel back in the day as a option. Think that year range
Check the CA dmv website. Im doing the same type of thing, and ill be free and clear with my 89 van in a little less than a year. Then it only needs safety inspections, and no longer has emissions, then I can put whatever the hell I want in the van, as long as it meets safety. Could be a steam boiler, and they would pass it
How long does CA do emissions, is there a cutoff point? or do they check any vehicle for emissions regardless of year based on the model requirements of the build year?
You need to go creep out this woman who works at DMV. Is she cute? or shaped like a troll like most of those angry DMV people. If shes not cute, then all you have to do is bring her some fresh bones so she can grind them to make bread.
Here is what I've read about diesel swaps.
-The diesel engine has to be the same year or newer than the vehicle it is going into.
-The diesel engine has to be on a CARB list of diesel engines. This I think is a secret list, but I gather it would be OK if it originally had the EPA emission compliance label.
- Which brings me to the EPA emission compliance label, I've read that the swapped in diesel engine has to have this label in order for you to pass.
-Also, they will require you to have the VIN of the donor vehicle so they know you're not using some marine or off road type engine.

She's my dad's girlfriend's daughter. And yes, yes, yes, and yes to all of the above. Also she doesn't understand my sarcasm most of the time, which causes problems hahaha
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
If there's a will, there's a way....maybe do a Vermont out-of-state registration and swap it over to Cali after VT clears the paperwork?
I used the Vermont out-of-state to get my untitled 1981 Kawasaki on the road...

How does that work?

Vermont allows you to register as a non-resident, even if you don't have a VT license. They don't require titles if your vehicle is old enough
As for transferring it to Cali, I have no idea. Do you have tag & title places out there?

Hmmm I'll have to look into this, although if I do end up doing anything it will probably be in the future when I either have a more lucrative job, dont have school, or have won the lottery haha
