Hi, down here in OZ ,none of our diesels came with a tacho , how do they pick up a signal from the engine? is it a hall effect pickup? Could one from a gas powered car be made to work using the diesel wiring? .

There is a hall effect sensor at the crank by the harmonic dampener. It goes to an amplifier, and then the gauge cluster in the car.

You could probably fab up a pick up sensor and make a converter box to run the gas tach

Hey thanks!! i did a search of the site and never found that thread.
It's a pity the W126 tacho will not fit in a W123 cluster because i have a pile of them. I now know how to work a W wire into a alternator and the 6 pulse rule . Even at my age i can learn stuff everyday ..ha ha ha
Anyhow, using a W wire i do not need to worry about a tach amplifier ,but i also learned how they are just the diagnostic plug with the amp plugged into it so i'll go the simpler route.
