I went to go do some shopping the other day and hopped in and tried starting the car. You can the key to the start position but it feels like nothing is there. The key will not return from the start position as it should as well. I am sure that something inside the actual ignition switch is broken as I have the auxiliary positions working.

The planned solution at this time is to just wire in a starter button or switch to the existing circuit and just bypassing the key switch. I'm just needing help figuring out which wire or group of wires from the ignition switch control the starter.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm having to drive my truck that gets a lovely 10 mpg

Once your key is in the go position, you can jump the two wires on teh passenger fender-they're in a small plastic block. That will fire up the starter. I'd get something figures out long term though-it won't trigger the glow plugs this way. When my ignition died I did this:

Momentary switch to the glow plug relay
Momentary switch to the starter solenoid (make sure it can take 30A to be safe)
Momentary switch to an electric vacuum valve, routed to the IP shutoff. You can get electric vacuum switches from any modern gas car with an EGR or from a Mercedes climate control system.

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

I already have the glow plugs on a seperate push button as the glow plug controller took a dump and I wired in a ford starter solenoid to handle that duty. I'm just trying to keep the key in play so you cent start the car without it. Sort of a cheap anti theft method for this fix

You can pick up a generic ignition cylinder form any car store and stick it somewhere. Then you still need a key to run it.

Just wanted to say make sure your grounds are all in good condition, also the main power wire to the starter as well as the switched starter wire and that your battery is holding voltage and has enough CCA. I have an issue where sometimes my car starts fine but others with will power the glow plugs fine but wont crank at all. Sometimes I mess with the engine ground and its fine doesn't help that I'm using a 520CCA battery when the stock one is 850CCA.

Just to add $0.02.

I know my car is a '93 w124 and this may have absolutly nothing to do with your problem but, here goes anyway. Mine wouldn't turn over back on 7/2. I only needed to move the fuse for the instrument panel a bit to get the ignition switch to engage the starter. It did it again on the 11th so I put in a new fuse and it's been fine since.

I understand you said your ignition switch doesn't feel right but it can't hurt to check the fuse and fiddle with it for a second or two. Just saying don't overlook something simple.

On my '93 it's fuse #5 that says instrument panel, tach, ignition switch and a couple other things I can't remeber right now.

What it seems like with whats going on with the car is that the actual ignition switch is broken internally. When you turn the key everything works as it should til you reach the start position with the key and it feels like nothing is there. Normally you can feel some sort of resistance when you go to start the car. This is not the case now.

I need to figure out what wire on the back of the ignition switch goes to the starting system so I can wire in a momentary on-off toggle switch in so I am able to start the car. ITs something I need to figured out as I am stuck driving my truck which gets 8-10 mpg vs the 24 that I get with the Benzo.

Thanks for the help so far guys. Any more guidance in this area is greatly appreciated

Let's see if I can figure out how to attach a pic and how clear I can keep it.

I'm guessing this is the '83 300SD in you profile. Right?

If you click on it, it should open a new window or tab and you should be able to zoom in on it.
At least in firefox it does for me.
