1974 Ford Maverick Diesel Project
1974 Ford Maverick Diesel Project
(for the record, the celica in question is no longer around and I'm currently looking to adapt this project to a '74 ford maverick!)
hi i'm from the north california area and i've got a celica diesel project planned, the engine i'd use will be a merc sourced om617. i know these are commin in the older toyota pick-ups, 4runners, and the fj40 and fj60 lancruisers. i know that there is an adapter for the toyota w56 5-speed to work with the om617, im just curious what to expect for how much it might cost, how hard it will be to preform the swap and what can i expect for hp/tq upgrades in the future
I think you're better off with any of the 60X engines. I dont have first hadn experience with them but these seem to have a lot more modding potentional then the 617
The adapter plate won't work with the 60x engines, so you're going to be stuck with ruining that sweet ass car with a heavy OM617.
As mentioned, the 617 will be heavy by Celica standards, so you'll need some front springs. You'll also need some taller rear gears.
Please go for a more effiecient engine such as a om602 or 605! I would love to see one of these engine in your car mOm617 is old and heavy...
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
616/617 are for trucks, the 60X engines are for cars. You should be able to get a 60X with a merc 5 spd, then you would only have to swap the shift linkage and make up a driveshaft.

what did the 605's come in? and what can i see for difficulty with wiring as its not my strong point

You can set up a 60X to be mechanical so that the only electrical will be the alternator and starter. The tach really isn't that complicated-you can fit a hall effect sensor and pickup to power a gasser tach. Think of a hall effect sensor as a switch that ticks every time the crank spins, but without any physical contact to the front pulley.

so a mechanical ran 602 with a 605 turbo and such could eaisly make 300hp and more tq?
Om617.952 is the best turbodiesel ever made by Mercedes... It's the best sounding engine, and it's oldschool! 20-24v are soulless compared to an om617a No problem with 300+ in an om617a... dare to be different
(11-26-2012, 10:28 AM)EDH_PerformanceHey now! I like my trucks slow-my daily driver has a whopping 100hp and weighs in at around 3,600lbs(11-26-2012, 09:57 AM)Simpler=Better 616/617 are for trucks
Slow trucks
(11-28-2012, 09:20 PM)GearheadJonny so a mechanical ran 602 with a 605 turbo and such could eaisly make 300hp and more tq?Probably yes, You will need to get the pump worked over by one of our European geniuses. I can't confirm or deny the turbo selection.

So I've been doing my research and I'm going to go with the OM 602, I'm still researching as far as what needs to be done. From what you guys told me before the 300 D is the easiest car to find this engine correct? And what manual transmission what usually fit this motor? That's all for now since I'm going to research as much as possible and look on here for more information thanks again guys.
(03-03-2013, 10:56 AM)aaa You can find 5-speed manual transmissions for the 602 in 190e and 190d's. There's also the option of a six speed from a c230 kompressor, if you can find one easily.Here's a 190e 5-speed for $375

one last thing for the 602 what am i looking at for weight? before this i originally considered an izuzu 4bd1t but cost and weight got to look else where
sweet, that's not much more than my 22r. I'm looking for a motor and tranny and once I get those I'll all the stock equipment to prep for cali inspection
so unfortunately many problems killed my celica, I replaced it with a '74 ford maverick and I'm still interested in doing a diesel swap. emissions won't be an issue now. more room under the hood too
