I just bought a Getrag 717.411 from a local junkyard. It was in a 109E 2.3l and was really grimy. I've cleaned it up and about to drain the oil to see if there are any chunks in the oil.

Other than that is there any other way to inspect the trans ( like inspection ports)?

Did you take the shift lever and rods with it? I have a 717.412 and a 717.450 here and the levers and rods are completely different. Best to get the lever that goes with the box.

Thanks for the replies guys...

Druk: I got the whole "shooting match"... Trans, links, shifter, brake and clutch assembly (with clutch master cylinder) for 225 euros. The donor had only 160k miles. the junkyard had no clue of what it was... SCORE Big Grin

5spd617: I'm not quite sure. Maybe my 87 300tdt "german pickup truck", or I might mary it to one of my "spare" OM603 motors and put into... Something????

I SURE WOULD LIKE an evaluation process though?!?!?! Confused

Turn the input and output shafts and run it thru the gears by hand. Should spot issues like a seized shaft or bad thrust bearings causing it not stay in gear. Not sure how to test the synchros by hand though.

If you can find a copy of the Haynes manual for the 190E 1984 - 1988, there is a great section on the 5-spd manual transmission. Shows the complete break down and assembly.

Don`t know if it is still available or not. I got my copy at a Swap meet . I some times see them in used book stores.

This manual make the one they did for the w123 pretty pathetic.
