OM604 Turbo into a Ford Taunus
OM604 Turbo into a Ford Taunus
Hi
Here is my new daily driver project. The car is a German Ford Taunus 1977 1.6L gasoline. Taunus never game with a diesel so I decided to make one
They only came with a R4 or V6 so I decided to use the OM604. They are easy to find and very cheap. Some say that they are not the best engine for high output since it has a bigger bore and longer stroke than the OM605/6 but we will see how much it can hold
The engine fit but with some mod to the oilpan. I decided to use a larger pump since it will need to supply the turbo with oil too.
I made the pan wider to have the same amount of oil. The welding looks bad but I think it will hold the oil.
Making engine mounts.
My first plan was to use a OM606 manifold and turbo but the turbo hit the subframe and it is very small so I forgot that plan.
Looks like it will be tight, oilpan and head hits at the same time
But with a little twist and straightening, it went in
The fuelpump is from a OM601 turbo and it has 6mm elements stock.
the oilfilter housing is from a OM602, the stock has a cooler and does not fit with an inline fuelpump.
any comments are welcome
Haha thats awesome! Myself I thinking a month ago why not build a nice 4 banger haha
Good idea with the manifold from the 606 :-) what gearbox do you use ?
Good luck to this I will follow that thread
I made prop shaft from some w124 and Taunus parts. and installed the transmission with some homemade parts and an engine mount rubber. And installed the hydraulic clutch system from a W124 250D. Taunus has a wire operated clutch.
The transmission is a 717.440 from a W124 95 E280 ambulance. Clutch is from same car, 240mm and 2 mass FW. I tried to install a 6 speed but it was to big, didn't want to cut the tunnel since the car has a very rust free and untouched body.
Then I installed some fuel lines and filter, a radiator(w124 250D) and it started right away

Wow you are working really fast it fit nice and got it to runn. It's always good to have some parts at home that can be modyfight to fit on some project gods luck to the pipework:-)
can we have some more overall pics of the taurus?
strange to me, as the ford taurus in the US was a much bigger FWD sedan from the late 80s to late 90s, fascinating to see the differences.
That 77 taurus looks like an old toyota to me. Pretty darn cool
another excellent job, I see its already the same green color as the van! Is it the same paint code? years are close enough

It's a TauNus he is working on.. Diffrent then the TauRus :-)[/u][/b]

Hansebanger, I am not that fast, the job between post1 and 2 took me about 2 weeks. The pipework is going to be so so. I have a lot of room for the manifold and turbo, but 3 inch all the way back will be difficult Waiting for a HX35 that is on its way from over there before I will start.
J3B, there are some more photos here: http://s1231.photobucket.com/user/erling...77%20green
Ford Germany made the Taunus in 3 different version from 70 until 82. They are light weight ca 1000kg and very easy to work on. They were one of the most popular cars for young guys in the 80's and I had many of them
I thought that the paint was the same as the Van but the van is more orange. This summer I was able to get the original paint for both cars
Taunus and Cortina is the same car with different names Germany/England
Nice project man. But a heads up. The 601-turbo engine is from a Vito bus, right. That's a good alda on those, but the 6mm elements are no normal 6mm, they can only deliver 80-85cc of fuel. Sorry to drop that bomb on you... Great pumps otherwise with high RS-number and so on.
I made the same mistake myself, so did a 8mm swap to get some power
Good luck with the build! Cool cars those old Euro-Fords.

I got the turbo and also bought a smaller compressor house and wheel, but unfortunately it will not fit the turbo has a 78mm OD wheel and the other wheel is 83mm OD so it will not fit the backing plate. I can machine the backing plate to make it fit, but then the stock wheel will not fit if I feel that I need the extra air flow from the bigger wheel
So I have made some progress on my manifold. Now I need a T3 flange to finish it
Regarding T3 flange, I can really recommend this one from a Norwegian supplier:

M10 threaded holes so ready for studs
Hello, cool project I have Om604 with OM601 injection pump too.How you adjustment your pump? I have timming 15 degrees ATDC.Start is no problem, but engine have hard idle and white smoke.Pump is stock from W124 200D 55kw.My OM604 have 70kw with Lucas pump.I tried adjustment pump but now ist ok,but running not perfect.Where is problem?
I have got some more work done to my manifold. And I found a 12cm2 house for the turbo that I will use. Next now will be oil lines in and out of turbo. Does anyone know how many degrees I can tilt the turbo center house? I think I read 20 degrees somewhere?
And what about oil line restrictor? is 2mm about the right size?
George: I don't know for sure. Maybe best to take a video and make a tread in the engine section. Hopefully someone can help you there
keep up the good work! Please take some videos when it running
Big turbo on a little engine
Had the first test drive today It runs ok with 7psi boost but I need much more fuel
http://youtu.be/Qc3r-2JCzqs
Finished the exhaust today. 3" all the way until the muffler which is 2,75". Will hopefully not be too load
Now I will try to see if I can fit a Bosch VE pump that can deliver enough fuel. An inline pump with big elements is off course better but a self build VE pump will be much cheaper and much more fun if I can make it work
I love the fact that you could tell people you'r runing a straight eight!
As you all know OM604 has a crappy Lucas electronic rotor pump so I installed a Bosch M mechanical inline pump. But it did not give enough fuel for my HX35 so I could send the pump to a shop for bigger elements or do what EDH performance suggested, install a Bosch VE mechanical pump. So I decided to listen to Daniel and try to install one even when I have never seen it done to a OM604 before. Today it started with the VE pump and it looks like it can provide some fuel

looks like a vw pump? i am also curious how you mounted the VE. If you dont know cummins used a VE on their 4bt witch had a 12mm plunger and 11mm heads. this is for a 3.9l 4 cyl. with 2500 rev limiter but you can throw that vw governor on it for the rpm's.
(01-21-2015, 04:35 PM)sorin_cel sounds like a VW now. also it is a video on youtube with a om604 running with a VE pump.
may i ask if the VE pump rotor shaft, fitted straight to the original om604 sprocket?

Can you post the lingk to the youtube video? do you know if it is bosch pump?
You can not use the 604 sprocket, you need the 2.9L adapter and sprocket

cool car, awesome work you have done to it!
would like to see that in real life

Yeah, I will do, maybe I take my 606 powerd Volvo 945 down
Tested the car again today. Much more power now and it even makes boost in neutral as you can see in the video(exhaust pressure on left) Not bad for a HX35 on a OM604
But the injector noise is quite bad on low revs(disappear on higher revs) Anyone knows how to solve that problem?
