K26 Turbo Upgrade for the OM617
K26 Turbo Upgrade for the OM617
I put an OM617.951 in my 89 Jeep Wrangler and it has the Garret stock turbo in it. With 0psi boost at idle, it is a dog off the line until about 10mph when boost kicks in and the motor starts to rev and it takes off like a rocket ship. From what I have read, the K26 turbo produces about 2psi at idle and provides much better acceleration. Anyone have any experience with this upgrade? Will any K26 bolt on, or just one off of an OM617? Anyone have one they would like to sell at a decent price? I would go to the u pull it, but dont have much time with work these days.
For background, ALDA is removed, manual boost controller delivering 15 psi max, ive got an EGT, boost gauge, etc... Ive done the valves, put in new monark nozzles, diesel purge, everything...
I have one I pulled off mine I'll have to check shaft play. My guess is it is not top notch.
2 psi at idle noo. I never saw its performance on a "stock" car. Mine had wide open 3",exhaust and fuel pump modified in some way by prior owner.
My testimony would not apply to stock. I swapped a garret onto it (60trim mod) and I didn't really notice a difference in initial boost. People say kkk26,spools quicker but I don't know.

Oh and a direct swap it is.

2psi at idle would be supercharger status. And if was building that much boost at idle, it would grenade from spinning too fast on too end unless the waste gate was enormous

Yes, that the consensus. There are plenty of options to get an even more responsive turbo than the kkk on the t3 flange and since your setup doesn't need a lot of boost, the options are even greater.
Maybe 2 psi by 2,000 rpm instead of by 2,500 rpm the Garrett dose it in

which one (or two) would you suggest mate?
thanks

There's like a billion turbos out there, depends on what you're looking for. If it were my '89 jeep, I'd try to find a turbo that's more flexible than the 2 old-tech O.E. options. Flow just as much on the compressor side or maybe a tad more, but less inertia and faster spooling. For a stock pump that's been turned up, maybe a gt25r? It should live a long time on 12 psi. Not sure if you can get one in a t3 flange but adapters are all over. Or how about a VNT? GT2559v. Turbo lag sucks on a 4x4.
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
Variable vane is the route you want to go. You will probably spend $100-$150 on pods to regulate it but the instant boost is incredible.
Over in the engine sticky the pattern for a 2056v (aka M53 from CRD liberty jeeps) is up there. 2056v is a bit small, the 2256v is closer. Neither is good for high HP numbers, but both spool fast.

Sounds like you need to turn up the pump a little

There's a guy on here in the bay area I believe who came up with a pretty simple way using the throttle and vacuum or something, I'll see if I can find it. Or I've seen big holset turbos have the controller taken off and replaced with a coil spring, when the back pressure gets too high the vanes start to open
An hx25 would be super fast spool, if your not too worried about top end. Maybe even a hy30 or a small s200 Borg Warner model.
The biggest problem with those is the exhaust manifold would have to be adapted to the smaller t25 inlet or whatever it is.
Oh and as far as a variable charger goes, their a fellow on 4btswaps that makes controllers to control the vanes on the turbos. Kinda pricey, but they have aweskme options and he will custom tune it to your likings
i have both turbos,i was using the garret stock turbo and the lag was too much,if i had to take off on a hill then i had to slip the clutch a lot just to see no boost, the kkk26 is the one i have now and is a lot better at takeoff but still laggy and restrictive at the top end, if you don't care having lots of power at high speed and prefer low end and faster spooling get the kkk26,if not modify your garret or put a better one on its place,i was thinking doing a biturbo setup,2 stage but at low boost because i want 5 psi at take off and high speed performance

Holset HE211W will spool even faster than HX25 as turbine wheel is smaller and only 5cm turbine housing. T25 flange on that one as well

(03-10-2014, 09:42 AM)snowbrd84 Million dollar question is, is there a good source to find these turbos? The go to ebay/craigslist yields nothing... I might try a holset, if i can find one...

I can get a HE211W drop shipped to you from Holset factory for 625$ (including my PayPal fees) if interested. These are brand new and genuine turbos
Do I get a million dollar for answering your question?

haha, I probably should have been a little clearer in the question. Between student loans, rent, bills, etc, $625 is not doable... That sounds like a perfectly acceptable price for a brand new, from the factory, part. But my budget is more towards the used and in good condition and sitting on someones shelf that has no use for it. There is no way I could spend more than $200, I dont even know how its going to work out... I am going to try the K26 first, and just keep on the lookout for a used holset...

Iheartboost has a Holset 351 for sale, but I think that's a little big without a superpump

Is anyone here actually driving with a 5cm exhaust housing on their turbo?
