I adjusted everything without touching idle, and now it just needs raised a little bit. I have 5ish turns on the Torque and full load is maxed out if I remember correctly (maybe that's rack limiter) I'd have to look at the back of the pump to remember haha

After more research and reading others experiences, you do have to adjust the idle stop screw with the full load. **M pump only**

That's right. Removed A/C and with that gone the aux fan is not needed.
Turning the full load and looking in the M pump it looks like there is "slack" behind the idle screw and nut. I'm guessing this is why the idle screw/nut was moved in conjunction with the full load. Still going to see if it will work not touching the idle

Uhh, technically yes I still have it... I got impatient and cut the cord. I have the end of it and it's not hard to repair a cut cord. If you want it it's yours for shipping cost

Intercooler mounted and plumbed today.
Had to cut a hole behind the drivers headlight. For behind the passengers i used the hole for the A/C dryer thing.
2.5" 90 degree aluminum elbows go through that hole and out the front of the fender, end up sticking toward the center of the car at a 45 degree angle.
Wrapped around.
I'm hating the lack of symmetry, I'll end up tweaking it. Turbo and manifolds mocked up. Seems to work!

I have a euro bumper on the way, I don't know if it will look good or obnoxious with the smaller bumper, time will tell.

Oh god, please fix that intake manifold! That looks janky. Surely you can replace those bends below the bumper with straighter pieces? Just remember all those bends == loss in air velocity == greater pressure drop.
If it were mine I'd cut the w115 intake and make it have a straight inlet towards the radiator. I would even toss up the idea of putting a 90 degree on the intake to save an extra silicone boot (possible place to leak)

I've welded all my life around the farm. Not especially good at aluminum, but I am taking a welding class up at school in the fall, and wont be too far from you. I could probably get it welded up during class if you can wait that long? I arc and mig weld a lot, so ill mostly be working on tig and mig aluminum.

This is actually not far from the truth. If you have two aluminum parts that are a slip fit (or better yet a press fit) with near 0 gap you can easily braze them. They're called Alladin brazing rods or white metal brazing rods.
Not as strong as welding, but that's partially why you want to have a slip fit for strength, and then use the brazing rod like a sealing goop

Had another very productive day. Got the new engine mounts, shocks, and arms put in. I also got the Holset in and running!!
Ass kicker of a job but when I started it up, after a quick supply/drain check I revved it a bit and got to hear that amazing Holset scream. It was all worth it just for that if nothing else
I also got my M pump installed and sort of running. I have to turn the idle down, once it fired up it started to run away. I used FI's last settings, took a chance, it didn't work out. All in all though I'm excited, the pump and turbo I've had for years actually work
MFSuper90, I might take you up on that sometime in the future, thanks for the offer. For right now I'm just going to run it. I will be altering the boost tubes a bit (not in the front).
Welding AL to be airtight it a little trickier than just welding it for structure. Doing thin AL might be a PITA too, with respect to burn-through.
If you can get a slip fit, I would braze. It just wicks right in there like solder. Some of the AL brazing rods on the market today are pretty badass.
Other than that, why bother? Your setup looks good. Nice work. Do the pipes have beads to grab the silicone? If not, send 'em to someone with a bead roller. It's good insurance.

I need to get this linkage sorted out, the MW linkage will not work at all. I have supposedly a complete M pump linkage but trying to figure out how they go together is difficult. Going to just start installing them, hopefully it will come to me as it goes in. No time till next week though.
I have to pull the pump again to adjust the idle I don't think I can fight the back cover off. Going to give the idle stop 1 full turn and see if that works. My understanding is that it's as if someone is holding the throttle off idle (stepping on the gas). I was able to get it to idle by holding the stop lever part way down.
I stole a few minutes last night while the fiancé was busy and got my gauges started.
A bit more tasteful than my last setup I think.
Before I left for work this morning I couldn't help but stare at this and smile.

Today kinda sucked. Ill summarize…
I knew I needed to bring the idle down, pulled the pump, adjusted the idle stop, reinstalled, same problem. I pulled the pump 4 times today
I looked at the idle stop inside the pump, and there was a gap (about 1/8'') between the stop and where the arm was supposed to contact it. So any adjustment I did to it was moot, the screw was no longer doing anything. Tried adjusting the idle stabilizer screw but it had no effect.
So defeated and dejected I returned all adjustments to where they started. The pump will now start and idle.
New problem though, #2 isn't pumping fuel. Nothing coming out of the pump on that cyl. I don't know what I want to do now, get a splined socket and pull the DV to see if its stuck or what. Or do I start looking for another M pump.
It would be great to just ship the pump over to europe now but I cant. Wedding to pay for and Ive spent most of my "fun" money.
The only good outcome of the day, I got the M pump linkage figured out and installed.
If number two was working before, it almost has to be the DV. But if I remember right one of those splined DV sockets are not cheap :/

I'm not 100% if it was working before or not, I think it was. The socket and DV seals (do one do them all) all said and done would be like $75. And that may not be the issue. Hopefully I can sell enough stuff to come up with $1000, maybe pick up an extra shift or two and just send the thing to sweden.
It's looking like I won't be driving this thing till august

Spent a few hours today and washed and waxed the old girl. Looks much better now.
In other news, I pulled the pump one more time, ended up leaving the back cover off and tuning it.
You absolutely have to adjust the idle stop screw in conjunction with the full load. All doubt has been erased.
Total adjustments
Torque Control - 1 turn CW
High Idle - 3 turns CW
Full Load - 2 turns CCW
Idle Stop - 2.25 turns CCW
Idle Stabilizer - 1 turn CCW
Nice strong idle. Its a bit slow to return to idle but there are trade-offs and I can live with it.
It does have a "miss" every so often, I'm almost certain that its the delivery valve seals, a set is on the way. There's still an annoying vibration at idle too, the only thing left it could be is the trans mount.
Waiting on the last few pipes to wrap up the intercooler piping, and the last piece for the exhaust, and throwing an air filter on it and I can actually drive this thing.

And I emailed Goran, setting up getting my pump modified

Update. I got the new DV seals in and got the timing right, It idles perfectly now.
I took it for a drive and it did great, 5lbs of boost just cruising around, if you got on it it would boost to 10lbs, then rapidly to 20lbs and really moved. Sounded great. However.
Once it warmed up it wouldn't return to idle on its own. It would idle around 3000rpm, and I could force it down putting it in 1st, but it wasn't really drivable.
So I pulled the pump yet again and returned the torque control where it started. Aaaand now its a dog. Technically it drives perfectly but the turbo response is vastly different and it just feels slow.
So I'm done trying to get any more out of this pump. Just going to ship it to dieselmeken.

Any details on how you plumbed the holset? Got an hx30 I'm getting ready to put in mine. I've got an extra oil supply line. I figure I can have it chopped up and get oil feed right. What did you do for return?

New flex discs and center support. Took it out on the highway, no vibrations, all seems well.
New problem. The coolant temp gauge isn't working. Theres a loose wire that comes from the same bundle as the glow plug wires, seems greenish in color. If placed to ground, the temp gauge pegs. The regular plug that goes on the actual coolant temp sensor in the head is attached.
Where does this wire go??
Does anyone (DeliveryValve) have a wiring diagram of the coolant temp sensor(s)?

Got any additional information on the restrictor? I know I can Google but googling will waste days and I will read a million different thoughts on why to and why not to restrict.
Greeley - Ill see if I can find it again. Im pretty sure the HX35, HX 40, HY35, HX30 all have the same oil feed threads.
I fixed my coolant temp sensor problem. Some dumbass hooked up the plug that went to the original intake manifold instead of the actual sensor plug :roll eyes:

So I've done some reading....max oil pressure from 617 motor around 95-100psi. Recommended max for holder 80psi or so.

Right. Forced had a good write up on his forum, when he got his he221 he played with a variety of restrictor sizes with a gauge after the restrictor. IIRC, a .045 hole resulted in no more than 75psi reaching the turbo at max oil pressure and no less than 15psi at idle.
So 1.5mm is roughly .060, which (to me) is passable. I can't remember what the max psi numbers were for a .060 but it's not that far off from .045
I've put probably 50 miles on my setup with absolutely no turbo issues/problems.
Well I just ordered it. I'll be hanging in the holset club soon. I like your intercooler pipes by the way. Not rediculous but enough to show that something is going on under there.

Yes the restrictor debate is a contentious one. My opinion, these turbos weren't meant to see 110psi of oil pressure and that's what the 617 puts out. Literature somewhere says no greater than 80psi.

On first startup I had to raise the idle, it was about 500, set it to 750. Timed 19BTDC.
First impressions, very nice idle, strong and QUIET. No smoke at idle at all, only a bit on a small idle rev. On first driving you immediately notice the increase in power, just part throttle backing out of the driveway, more pep.
Driving out of my subdivision was pleasant, smooth and quiet, felt like a different car. Then I turned out onto the main road. Mind you this turbo isn't small, the most I was getting out of it with a tweaked stock M-pump (with driveable settings) was 10psi at 4000rpm.
Wow does this car haul now. I damn near hit 60 in 2nd gear! Only a very light amount of smoke before the turbo spools and no smoke after it lights, I'm seeing 20psi at 3000rpm now. And she sounds amazing, like a jet turbine. Love it.
Max boost 22psi, max egts 1200. Perfect.
Taking it on the highway was an amazing change. I've never had acceleration enough to pass on the freeway, now 60-80 is in a few seconds.
Of course now my clutch is kaput. It still drives but it's slipping and burning and making noise. It probably has close to 50,000 miles on it so it's no wonder but that's the next project.
Overall I'm very very happy. There is simply no comparison to a tuned stock pump, it's a whole different world.

Thanks man. I'm not 100% yet but I'm thinking of going with an uprated clutch, most likely a stage 3. Reading about pucks, people generally don't like them. Sounds like the clutch becomes an on/off switch.

did you put the external Alda on the pump? I have it but it doesn't look like it will clear the motor mount.

I have the same pump as you I think. 6mm 90cc. Mine is at 24 degrees though. Smokes some at idle.
You are doing it the right way getting your Intercooler in first whereas I have done it the Jack ass way.
