anyone have a TDI?
So im getting my money soon for the car and I really want to pick up a golf TDI (Mk4) with a 5 speed.
Ive found a few good ones but I figured I would ask here if you guys know of anyone selling one or have seen one in the area.

In my opinion, If you want reliability with great economy, than you want the 2003 Golf with the ALH coded engine and Bosch VE injection pump. I say this because the mk4 has been in production for about 4 years to work out the kinks and it's the last year of the of the ALH engine.
The 2004-2005 Golfs got the Pump Duse BEW engine code. I like the PD motors, but they require 505.01 VW spec specific oil, may have cam issues and may have very cold winter hard starts. But once you get that sorted out, I think they are great motors. But it does cost money and may not for everyone.
Incidentally, regarding the 2014, what out for hot shut down during the regeneration process. This will cook your turbo. If you do a search, you'll see many turbo failures before 100k mikes.

Both jetta's ive owned were ALH engines. Super reliable. Never left me stranded.
damn, I could easily get a golf 2.0 but most of those cars already have 100k+ miles on them and I know they wont last much longer.

he drives the heck out of his, loves the car.

It's suppose to lower emissions on the cars. Every new diesel has it, and pretty much is forced to have it to comply with emission laws.
I hate it, it's terrible for an engine.
DPFs - well communism also works in theory . It is supposed to collect carbon particles (soot) and when it's full a really late post injection raises EGTs to oxidize the carbon into CO2.
The problem is ash from burning oil is also collected and cannot be burned off.So it clogs the filter after 100K miles or so.Then it has to be cleaned or replaced. You can also remove it but you have to reprogram the ECU so it doesn't throw any codes.

Thy can be removed and cooked in a professional oven(big truck shops have them) to get rid of oil redisue, contamination, etc.
The system is fine for long hauls, but short in-town trips don't do so well. I imagine it would be good (engine wise) ot have a bypass for short trips

$3k will get you a pimpin' ranger. 500x easier than a FWD, and you can use it to haul parts for the 240. Shoot, it will pull the 240 around all day.

most people id say hell yeah, but youve been in so many accidents maybe you should stay away from the early vws or anything that will fold up like a house of cards when the next one comes.
personally id buy something cheap, relatively recent but pre airbags so you dont have to replace them, and incredibly common since you will probably be needing to hit the yards for fenders and bumpers a few times.

i bought a 1999 bug tdi alh with 185k on it for 1500 and now im in the middle of an engine swap do to worn out cylinder boars make sure if you get an ALH turbo that it has always been run on VW approved synthetic oil.
60mpg in that little death trap actually is pretty terrible. ALH volkswagons have been reported on getting 50-60mpg average when well taken care of and low rolling resistance tires etc etc.

I just got the new TDI engine back in my 99 bug this weekend with a light weight flywheel new clutch / timing belt. almost every bolt on the engine is torque to yield one time use bolts I spent $80 just in the motor mounts and timing belt bolts to put it in there. Make sure if you get a TDI to disconnect the EGR. The intake on the new engine with around 100k was 50% plugged up with oily carbon exhaust deposits. I'm pretty sure it failed because of non synthetic oil and a bad EGR control valve that was stuck open causing the rings to stick and wear the cylinder block. Now the engine has no cat or egr to screw it up.
i ended up buying a 2002 Golf GTI with a 1.8T.

yo, if you want to go nuts on it install a wideband and EGT gauge pre turbo. Not that it will give you any power, but it's fun to watch the needles swing
Internet a harness? I'd just as soon solder ot the cut wires. It's not like you will be swapping radios again anytime soon.

So I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted to do with the stereo.
for some reason people have just been giving me their old units when I tell them I am shopping for one. Almost bought a $300 unit but then decided against it.
I think I am going to try to repair the one that came with the car. The pioneer AVIC-N1
its a single din with a pull out screen, ya know...the motorized ones. The thing just got stuck. I took it apart. I have to test the motors and the flex cable from the board to screen is cracked. I think Ill just used some old floppy cable and solder that directly into the boards.
I also bought new shocks. Bilsteins b4 touring sport editions.
oh and a new shift knob.
Ill have to go to the junkyard to find a stock air cleaner box, the under the radio console piece.
so far just trying to clean it up. its very dirty and gross. The PO was a mechanic by trade so the car is just covered in oil and shit.
but that's what you get for 2,800
Still not sure what I want to do with the merc. 1,000 to just straighten it out is very tempting.

You can easily straighten the merc out, or sell it to me for $100
