Last night while surfing Craigslist I found a 1985 300td 5spd I went and bought it for $900 at 10:00 at night in the dark and limped it to my dads house a few miles awayBig Grin

I think it has a bad ignition switch we had to roll start it and I had to jiggle the ignition switch to get the lights top come on. Then we drove it home it's got + 400k miles. It's a non turbo but it runs great after pull starting it. It had great oil pressure and it ran right on temp all the way home

The good:
and it has a fifth gear! euro lights and bumpers and a manual sun roof and rear seat and working rear suspension

The bad:
It has sever rust on the undercarriage I don't know if it's fixable yet it's made mostly of ducting zip screws and expanding foam. It was hit in the front and needs a new grill and front bumper but that was about all that got damaged!Big Grin

I'm going to go check it out in the light after I get off work today

I've got the Getrag as well. I can give you the parts code for the lever bushes... they're dirt cheap over here - about 1$

you have the most amazing luck! Big Grin Figures it would be you who finds the only 5-speed 123 on craigslist in north America that isn't counting reverse as a forward gear.

I went to look at a 240d the guy said was a five speed it was actually a 4speed auto

on a side not I went over to my dads house late last night to try and switch the ignition switch from a 240d I am striping out. But the switch is different the older one just unplugs and the one on the 300td has to have the key turned on to remove it so I had to order a new one

sorry guys I forgot to take any pics I'll get some buy this weekend

Its a very strangely optioned car it got manual sunroof and windows and no ac But it has the 5spd and leather seats including the rear cargo seat

Pretty good option combo, performance, comfortable leather, large seating capacity, combined with maintenance free hard to break manual windows and no air conditioning.

I once picked up a jeep cherokee of craigslist with weird options like that too. 2 wheel drive 4 cylinder, 5 speed, factory tint with enhanced sound package on a bright red truck.
Basically, someone had ordered a high station wagon with great stereo options. Unfortunately for the seller, a 2wd jeep is worth jack all

grab one of those perfect bodies in a CA junkyard. How hard is it to buy a whole car out of a pick and pull in CA? do they allow that?

I have considered many times driving out there to get something rust free over the years and towing it back.

You can buy one from a pick and pull. My buddy found a 1978 Pontiac Y-88 Solar Gold "Special Edition" Trans Am other wise known as "the Gold Bandit" with all matching numbers at an Ecology yard. They just recently placed it on the stilts before he got there. He couldn't believe someone junked it! He calls me up and ask me: "What do I do? I can't have another "Bandit" hanging in my driveway!" (He owns a 1978 "Bandit" black and a 1970 Firebird) I told him it was his duty to save it. So he talked to the manager and they sold it to him for 800 bucks with a salvaged title. Brought it home that same day. We started it, but the Olds 400 had a knock to it. So he's rebuiding it and going through the whole car.

Here are some pics and the vin number

On Saturday I replaced the ignition switch. And it was still dead then I found all of the positive wires where ripped off the starter. So I fixed them and all of my electrical stuff worked except the starter it was still bad. I pull started the car and drove it the rest of the way home then I dug through the crap in my garage and found a spare starter and replaced it. Now it start and runs great. and has almost 3 bar oil pressure when warm!

you even have that euro hitch the wagon owners are frothing over!

That car doesn't look near as bad as I thought, but rust repair is probably not going to be fun.

Somebody drove the hell out of that car, i don't think ive seen seats that worn in out of an MB before. That looks like my van seat. Of course, the leather sure doesn't hold up like the MB tex amazingly. I pulled a complete set of leather seats out of my old 300D that were less damaged than that, but still cracked and worn. I wonder if MB had any idea that MB tex would effectively last forever?

This is an awesome find, combined with a rust free body and a turbo motor, this is going to be a fun project

Dose any one know if the 5spd shifter is rebuildable It looks like there are some plastic bushings in it!

Today I got an 1984 300TD turbo diesel wagon it's rust free. I got it for $700 the guy told me that the transmission was locking up and would cause the engine to stall. I bought it and replace the fuel filters and drove it home and it didn't stall but it started sputtering so I pulled in to the gas station and filled it up. The gauge read 1/2 tank! It took 17 gallons and it stopped stumbling after I filled upBig Grin

The interior is ruff but saveable and the body is in great shape and Evan has ok paint so this will be the new home of the 5spd transmission and euro bumpers and lights and trailer hitch

I'll post some pics tomorrow

That doesn't look that far off from a W201 5-speed shifter. Any chance you could take it out and take a pic of it? I have some W201 shifter pics we could compare. maybe something from a 190E or D would work. I know you can get rebuild kits for those as well, maybe the rebuild kit would mostly work on your shifter?

I have a couple broken W201 shifters, you might be able to scavenge parts

Why aren't there any awesome deals like this in central California!!

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )

shit thats pretty different. You ripped that rubber bushing and lost that spring clip? I had the same problem with a 4 speed a while back, looks like almost the same mechansim, maybe the rubber bushing from a 4-speed application could work if its even available? It actually looks just like a 4-speed shifter, at least in that reverse part, maybe one of those would work for parts

However, could you drill a hole down the center of a rubber stopper from a hardware store and make a similar type bushing?

From what I remember, its totally related the reverse lockout, right? maybe you can come up with something, or find something almost the same. I have a feeling that it would be possible to manufacture something that would work almost the same way

That wagon looks great, and thats a beautiful color! I don't understand how you find these cars on craigslist with no rust in CO. Its amazing

We put down gravel witch chips paint and breaks windshields! your lucks if a windshield last more than a year out here

Both of my 4spd shifters had a nut that held the shifter in place I cant for the life me figure what actually held the shifter in the 5spd assemblyHuh

The shifters is part# 123 267 05 10 and it was $31
While my family was cooking turkey yesterday

I switched the ignition switch and door handles form the euro wagon to the new rust free American wagon and I fixed the sun roof assembly to get the new wagon road worthy its complete and rust free now!

Do the W123 wagons still use shocks absorbers in the rear with the hydraulics? our new wagon feels bouncy in the rear but it defiantly lifts up after starting it with the hydraulics

I'm finally getting started on this swap after only 4 years of home improvement projects witch are still on going. with our first house. So here's the up date both cars are up on jack stands i am giving the remains of the euro car and its non turbo engine and old auto transmission to my friend for help with the swap. I will be stealing all of the the euro goodness for my new car bumpers lights trailer hitch and all. The American turbo wagon was up first we removed the auto transmission and drive shaft and shifter last weak end this weekend we removed the 5 speed Getrag and other parts and started moving them over to the new turbo wagon. Here are some pictures you can see the extent of the rust in the euro car and that's not even the bad rust I would say about 1/4 of the floor boards are rotted away and reassembled with spray foam and old license plates! I still need to stab the manual transmission in to the new car. My friend has already started putting the rusty doner car back together with the old auto transmission he is building some kind of Apocalypse car out of it for some reason? I just found my spare clutch kit for my old 240d turbo and it looks like the same clutch so I'm going to use it in the 300td.

I finally got some traction this weekend my friend got the rust bucket running months ago but I've been fighting the pilot bearing for months finally got one in after ruining the first 3. Today I stabbed the manual transmission in and the shifter assembly is installed. I've got the wiring sorted out it was as simple as unplugging the auto wiring harness from the transmission and plugging in the manual one from the shifter assembly for reverse lights super simple one jumper block for the neutral safety switch. I need to install the drive shaft and the pedal set and clutch slave and then we should be close to running! Then the car needs other things fixed like the rear nitrogen canisters and the the intake/exhaust manifold are leaking. I have some non EGR manifolds to install also

So i got some stuff accomplished this weekend. The original clutch line got mangled and i had to order a new one for a 240d it worked perfectly it was 80$ but came unbent so i had to make it fit. I also got the drive shaft installed. Except im missing 3 bolts. So i need to hit a pick n pull this weekend. I also got the pedal set swaped over and all of the clutch lines installed. I will need to rebleed the clutch and front brakes. Then i will fire her up for the 1st time in 2 years hopefully next Saturday or Sunday. Ill try and take some videos.
