Engine choices
Hello peeps
This is my first post I have a Unimog I've been playing with for many years I've moved the front axle forward by 350 mm to improve stability when off-roadies. it's a u600421 fitted with an om 616 that I fitted years ago I'd like a little more power and a sump mounted to the rear for clearance to the axle.
I really don't want to go bigger due to the weight over the front as Unimog have a bad habit of lifting the rear axle when going down steep banks.
Basically I'm asking if there is a four cylinder with a rear sump that has the same bell housing patern as the OM 616.
Many thanks for your help
Mognut
A rear sump 4 cylinder?
I might be bias, but I'd recommend a VM Motori 2.8L 16v for your Unimog for the following reasons;
1) it'll weigh about the same as your current OM616 (485 lbs for 2.8L)
2) has rear sump already so no mods to oil pan, pump/sump
3) it's turbocharged with a modern variable geometry turbo from Garrett making 100 HP more than your OM616 in stock form and can take a chip tuning for much, much more.
4) opens up a few more options for heavy duty transmissons
Cons?
1) costly
2) doesn't have the proven history of OM motors (it's a new comer with limited use)
3) electronics
4) probably won't bolt up to your trans but maybe it will. Who knows?
I hope this helps!
If you decide to go petrol, go with a Chevy 4.3? Not too heavy, and I'm sure an adapter exists on the market.

That would be nice but there a bit thin on the ground in the UK, I'll see if I can find a conversion kit online, is it the same block as a 5.7 small block ?
Bascally a 5.7 with the rear 2 cylinders missing. They are cheap, dime a dozen here. Carb, TBI, and Vortec setups exist.
