You have a TB251 (T25). A T3 will be an upgrade but it won't fit the T25 flange. A lot of the VNT turbos VW uses in europe have a T25 flange.

The OM617 AirResearch turbo is a Garrett T3-45. It's map is available on the not2fast turbo calculator. Forced Induction has a link to a page that has all the OM617 specs plugged in to that calculator.

if I were to get a new T-25 flange turbo, would that decrease spool time? what are the benefits of a new turbo over the stock on the OM602.961?

would it yield more power too even though my Bosch pump really cant put out much more than it is now...?

This HX25 would be a good upgrade, about equivalent of a T3 but it will flow more air.

aside from bolting up a new turbo, how does one deal with oil and or coolant lines?

i take it the HX25 spools quicker than the stock turbo, but can the Injection Pumps boost compensator make use of a few extra PSI?

I am indeed curious about the best turbo for the job.
seems like a stock late 90s DSM turbocharger should be a pretty good bet. T25 flange and they are properly cheap.

I believe that most of the the HX/HY25s are T3 flanged..although I have heard that sometimes they can be t25.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HOLSET-HY...414aa653fc

Here's an HY25w. FI said this seller can be bad though; make sure you get some good pictures of the compressor wheel and turbine if you decide to get this one. The damaged blades might make it scrap depending on the severity.

IMO the holsets are best suited to those wanting high pressure ratios. If you want 20+ psi boost then they're a good place to be shopping.
If you don't want 20+ psi boost, there are many garretts which will bolt on to a T25 flange and cover the air flow requirements.
The whole bottom half of the Garrett GT range has T2/T25/T28 flanges, they are also far more compact than your average holset.

However, those looking for a turbo upgrade, should first ask themselves what they're looking for. Often their current turbo can just have it's wastegate tweaked for more boost or exhaust housing changed for bigger/smaller for more top end power or more low end torque.

Thanks guys, im looking for more low end power my car does not really have much power intil about 2500rpm i was thinking a turbo upgrade would help maybe with low end power not sure maybe i should mess around with IP? any good way to increase power with out it costing major money? if i do a five speed conversion i would like lower end power becouse what i read its geared a lot different. any thoughts?

with a newer turbo, you can get it to spool quicker, but the biggest thing I have done to reduce spool time in my 190D turbo is swap out the airbox for a cone, and make the exhaust as free flowing as possible. I get boost at about 1,600rpm now..

you will never get boost at 1,000rpm with these engines, its just not how they are.

Another 190D 2.5Turbo / 5 speed owner here. Interesting thread, and I've been wondering about this for a while also - how to get some more "low end" power. I'm running a 3.07 rearend and a 5-speed from an '84 190D 2.2 (lower ratios than the "gasser" transmissions).

The higher rpms (2500 and up) power is good, but I could definitely use some more punch around town and at lower rpms.

I've done 2 190D 2.5 Turbo 5-speed swaps so far. I didn't take any pics of the actual swaps in progress, but I have some pics of the finished cars. My current car actually started life as a '93 190E 2.6, into which I swapped the 2.5 Turbo engine, 5-speed tranny, 3.07 rearend, and the right front fender from a 2.5Turbo. So I've got the updated body trim and cladding of the '93, with the 2.5 turbo and 5-speed manual trans. I like this car very much - but would enjoy it even more with some additional low-end power.

Thanks Winmutt. It's been coming along, but still needs some of the details worked out. I painted it myself last spring, but it has a large amount of orange peel. I've just about made up my mind to do a complete re-paint.
