I bought a wagon block with the head and it's in my garage.  I read somewhere where someone had ported the head on his MB diesel and the results were another 5% more power or so.  Who has experience with this and where can I send my head to to get this done?  I'd like to put a new turbo on and increase the exhaust to 3 inches, plus increase the holes in the prechambers even more than they are after I made them bigger.  Give even more advance timing as well.

Please advise as to head porting or any other mods... thx

iv done a few 617 heads now and i would say that with a larger turbo the effects are more than 5%. that being said there is some risk in porting these heads far enough to really make a difference as you can breach the port walls into the coolant jacket. also its a very long process i spent something like 30 hours on the last one i did.

85 300D om617: 8mm M pump 175cc 5200rpm, holset he221w @ 30psi, large A2W ic, compounds on the way.

looks like I have to find a engine head shop via google and send it to them for flow analysis and porting.

How hard is ultrasonic depth measuring stuff to come by if we want to get rather keen with the die grinder? Probably need a mortgage?

the ultrasonic units that are easily available work ok and aren't too expensive however the transducer heads are a bit large to work in all the sections of the ports. i used to have access to some nice NDT equipment i used when i did the first head for my car. i worked out that the 617 heads don't tend to have much core shift at most 2-3MM in the thicker sections with port wall thickness around 7-8mm at its thinest. i have some photos from cutting a head into sections somewhere but i cant find them. as for flow benching a head and having a professional port them all the shops i talked to that i would trust to really know what they are doing either didn't want to touch it once i mentioned it was a Mercedes and diesel or wanted well into the 4 figure range to do it. you can do what i did and build your own flow bench and do a lot of research. its not like heads are all that rare or expensive.

The wagon heads are quite rare in good, rebuildable condition.

There's a shop in NC which I've been talking to which seems like they will be able and willing to do this for me.
